Okay. You抳e read all the features about setting up your computer and optimising your system. You regularly defragment your hard drive. You know which drivers to select, which monitoring system and which file cache scheme to use in the Audio System Setup dialogue. You know the shortcut keys, how to use Window Sets (if you抳e got a Mac or VST5 on PC), how to customise your work area and the 1001 other things that help you use Cubase VST more efficiently, effectively and productively. But now you want to know how to actually do something musical with it.
If that sounds like you, then you抳e come to the right place. In this and subsequent features we抣l be delivering power user tips and tricks and explaining, step by step, how to do useful,
interesting and sometimes just plain weird things with your sequencer.
A word of caution: these pages are not really for the novice. They assume you have a good working knowledge of VST from the previous tutorials in CM and that, if necessary, you aren抰 afraid to r ead the manual to learn the bits you don抰 know.
The tips will be a miscellaneous collection covering both MIDI and audio applications. This month we look at an area of music arrangement which is often neglected: stereo positioning. To be more specific, we look at how you can dynamically position MIDI instruments in the stereo image using VST抯 Logical Editor. This can give an added dimension to all types of tracks, from solo piano parts to arpeggio backings and lead lines.
The basic principle is quite simple: to give every note its own pan position. You can do this manually but it抯 a slow procedure. The method described here automates most of the process, and the principles described can be used to create other effects, too.
-------------------------------------------------------------
1, Copy the part to be panned onto the track below and set it to the same MIDI channel. Select the copy and open the Logical Editor. Click on the Expert button ?cos that抯 what you are now. Convert the note data to pan data.
2, In the Filter section, set the Event Type to Equal Note and the other columns to Ignore. In the Processing section, set the Event Type to Fix and to Control Change. Set the value 1 column to Fix with a value of 10, which is Pan抯 Controller number.
3, We want to use the MIDI note number for the Pan number, so set the value 2 column to value 1 (from the drop down menu). Set the Position to Minus and 4, and in the Functions section select Transform. Click on the Do It button.
4,Name the Preset DynamicPan and Store it. The two tracks will look something like this, with Pan data following the note numbers. If the note range is small, the stereo spread will be small. But we can make it bigger. Go back to step 1 with a copy of the note data.
5,Find the highest and lowest notes in the part, say 48 (C2) and 116 (G#7). In the Logical Editor, subtract the lowest note number from all the others ?in Filter set Event Type to Equal Note. In Processing set Event Type to Keep and value 1 to Minus 48. Do It.
6Subtract the low from the high (in this example: 116-48=68) and divide 127 by the result (127/68=1.87). Set value 1 to Multiply by this value. Set the Filter to Ignore and the Processing Event Type to Keep. Do It then select and use the DynamicPan preset.
